Frequently asked questions about odds formats

How do you convert American odds to decimal?

If the American odds are positive: decimal = 1 + american/100 (+150 is 2.50). If negative: decimal = 1 + 100/|american| (-110 is 1.91). Negative odds say how much you must risk to win 100; positive odds, how much you win risking 100.

What does a negative American price like -110 mean?

That the outcome is the favourite: you must risk 110 to win 100. -110 is also the standard line for spreads and totals in the US: the extra 10 is the bookmaker margin, not an opinion about the game.

What is the implied probability of odds?

The percentage of times the bet would need to win just to break even: 100 divided by the decimal odds. 2.00 implies 50%; 1.50 implies 66.7%. It is the number that actually matters when deciding whether a price is worth taking.

Why do the implied probabilities of a match add up to more than 100%?

Because the bookmaker builds its margin into the odds. If an even match were priced 2.00 and 2.00 (50% + 50%), the house would make nothing; instead it offers 1.91 and 1.91, implying 52.4% each — 104.7% in total. That extra 4.7% is the margin, and the higher it is, the worse for the bettor.
